NEW JERSEY V. T.L.O. (1985)
T.L.O.(TERRY), A 14 YEAR OLD FRESHMAN AT PISCATAWAY HIGH SCHOOL IN NEW JERSEY, WAS CAUGHT SMOKING IN A SCHOOL BATHROOM BY A TEACHER. THE PRINCIPAL QUESTIONED HER AND ASKED TO SEE HER PURSE. INSIDE WAS A PACK OF CIGARETTES, ROLLING PAPERS, AND A SMALL AMOUNT OF MARIJUANA. THE POLICE WERE CALLED AND TERRY ADMITTED SELLING DRUGS AT SCHOOL. HER CASE WENT TO TRIAL AND SHE WAS FOUND GUILTY OF POSSESSION OF MARIJUANA AND PLACED ON PROBATION. TERRY APPEALED HER CONVICTION, CLAIMING THAT THE SEARCH OF HER PURSE VIOLATED HER 4TH AMENDMENT PROTECTION AGAINST "UNREASONABLE SEARCH AND SEIZURES."

the court ruled for the school. when your in school a security gaurd can search you if he wants to. my oppion is she is reterded if your gane smoke in school and have marry j on you you should hide it

Im almost positive that she lost that case because if she wasnt being a dummy smoking in the bathroom then they wouldt have searched her and she wouldt have been caught... I think shes stupid if she thinks shes going to win because shes not... and if she did.. Thats a true mirical.

i believe that the school had all right to do that because she was caught smoking in school and when that was not allowed so they had to look through her purse and she shouldnt had been smoking in the first place and on top of that she had marijuana on her and was selling it so she shouldnt be talking at all because she know she was wrong

The supreme court ruled in the school's favor. The school had to right to search in her purse because she was smoking in the bathroom. If they didn't search her then the school wouldn't know that she was selling drugs.

they included the 4th amendment. they did what they had to do because it is illegal to smoke or carry illegal drugs in school.
