KENT V. UNITED STATES (1966)

Morris Kent, 16, who had been on probation since he was 14 for burglary and theft, was arrested and charged with three home burglaries, three robberies, and two counts of rape in Washington, D.C. Because of the seriousness of the charges and Morris's previous criminal history, the prosecutor moved to try Morris in adult court.

Morris's lawyer wanted the case to stay in juvenile court where the penalties were much less severe. He had planned to argue that Morris had a mental illness that should be taken into account when deciding where he would be tried. Without a hearing, the judge sided with the prosecutor and sent Morris to adult court, where he was found guilty and sentenced to 30 to 90 years in prison. Morris appealed, arguing that the case should have remained in juvenile court.

[HOW DO YOU THINK THE SUPREME COURT RULED IN THIS CASE?] [HOW WOULD YOU RULE ON THIS CASE?]

its hard to say because he messed up. however if he is mentally ill then he needs special care. another thing locking him up all of his life is crazy at least give him a chance when he groes up

i think that they should have done two cases one for being a miner and the second one after he became an adult

the court ruled in favor of the the trial being in adult court. i would say its your fault and keep him in adult court cause if the severity of the crime

I think that they ruled in favor of the prosecutor. But he should have been tried a an adult at 16. Because if he was going to be tired as an adult without all of the rights an adult has is not fair. It doesn't make sense that they say he can serve 30 to 90 years in prison but he can't vote. That ruling was unfair. I would have tried him as a juvenile not as an adult.

I THINK THAT THEY SHOULD HAVE GAVEHIM JUVINILE TIME AND KEPT IT THERE HE WOULD HAVE HAD SOME YEARS NOWHERE NEAR 30 TO 90 TO THINK BOUT WHAT HE DID.....ON OTHER HAND I WOULD HAVE CHARGED AS JUVINILE THERE ARE KIDS WHO KILL PPLE WHO GET JUVI COURT

i think they would have sided with morris because he is only 16 and should have stayed in juvenile court. i would have kept it in juvenile court.

If i was the judge ill wait until at least until he 18 and then tried him in adult court. Also i wouldn't give hime 30 to 90 years. At least 20.

they might had ruled for morris kent.

i would rule for him because he was only 14 so he should been taken to a juvenile court even though of all the new charges. yea he did make a lot of mistakes but still should got a chance. maybe if he went to juvenile court the sentence wouldnt have been that long.

i think if he has mental problem then they should rethink what they will do if not then at least reduce the sentence.

I think the courts decision was good, because he had so many accounts and if he wanted to act like a grown man all big and bad, then he should have been grown enough to go to an adult court. If i were the one ruling i would sent him to an adult court. and have him 30 to 90 years in prison.

I believe the supreme court didn't rule in his favor. And if I ruled the case, I would've sent him to juvenile because he was only 16 at the time.

9:11 AM

Anonymous Anonymous said...

i think he deserves to go to adult court because he has rape and theft charges and those are not minor charges

9:13 AM

Anonymous Anonymous said...

i think that he sould have been tried as an adult becuase they sould keep him on a leash if he was that messed up and would u want him back on the streets o do it again

9:14 AM

Anonymous Anonymous said...

Well that is to harsh cause he still has his whole life ahead of him to change but they took that chace away but he did have many charges but he is still a kid

I think that the supreme court ruled in the prosecuter's favor because of the rape

10:45 AM

Anonymous Anonymous said...

i think they shoiuld have left it in juvinille court because he is too young no matter what he did he is still to young to go to adult court

10:45 AM

Anonymous Anonymous said...

I think putting him in adult court was ok but giving him that many years is ridiculous...also take into consideration that he has a mental problem and should have had help a long time ago.

10:46 AM

Anonymous Anonymous said...

he should hav been in juvenile court i would have let him go to juvi court

10:46 AM

I disagree if he want to actlike he's grown, he should be treated like a grown up. He was Stupid!

10:47 AM

i think the court ruled badly because ni 16 year old should have to serve that much time in prison. they should have kept it in juevnile court.

10:56 AM

Anonymous Anonymous said...

yes

10:56 AM

Anonymous Anonymous said...

i wouldn't think that the judge would put a 16 year old with mental illness in prison for the rest of his life, but on the same token he did violate and rape somebody so he shouldn't be punished to such a degree, maybe some therapy and up to 15 years with parole..........

10:56 AM

Anonymous Anonymous said...

no he should have have been taken to adult court! his charges were too servere!

10:57 AM

Anonymous Anonymous said...

i would have took his illness and family surrondings into consideration before trying him ad i would have tried him n juvi court

i dont think that he had any mental illness, when people are backed into a wall in court they always plead for reason of insanity and i think thats crap, he got what he deserved.

12:31 PM

Anonymous Anonymous said...

because the lawer wanted him to stay in juvenile court. i would put him in the big jail instead of juvenile.

12:38 PM
