HAZELWOOD SCHOOL DISTRICT V. KUHLMEIER (1988)

Cathy Kuhlmeier, Leslie Smart, and Leanne Tippett, juniors at Hazelwood East High School in St. Louis, Missouri, helped write and edit the school paper, the Spectrum, as part of a journalism class. An issue of the paper was to include articles about the impact of divorce on students and teen pregnancy. The school's principal refused to publish the two stories, saying they were too sensitive for younger students and contained too many personal details. The girls went to court claiming their First Amendment right to freedom of expression had been violated.

[HOW DO YOU THINK THE SUPREME COURT RULED IN THIS CASE?] [DO YOU THINK THE ARTICLES SHOULD HAVE BEEN PUBLISHED? EXPLAIN]

heck yeah. first of all you have the right to say what is on your mind as long as its not provacative and nasty or potty mouthish in school . they did nothing wrong all they was trying to do is express and to have a say on whats really going on in our society.

the court ruled in favor of the school. the articles should have been published after the principal worked with the student to resolve the issues and edit the articles

I think the Supreme Court ruled in favor of the girls. I think they should have been published because the words could have helped someone who was going through things like that right now.

I think the supreme cort should let them post there articals. I think that the girls should have been able to post there articals. Its stuff that needs to be talked about and or discused and if the principal thinks that it would be too much for the younger students to handle ... then they need to grow up because its something that people go through.. its reality...

As teenage girls are growing up they need to know this for there own sake and the 2 articles should of been published.

i believe that they ruled for the girls because they were right.

yea i think that they should have been published because it was the truth and they were asked to write them and he knew that some of them might be with too many details so he should have been ready for anything to come his way.and him not wanting to publish them do violate the first amendment

They made the principal edit reasonable and then publish it. Yes because younger students are going to either now or later and it better to now it now then later.

I think the supreme court should allow the articles to be published. She has the freedm of expression and if kids think they're old enough to have sex, then they should be old enough to take the criticism of what peeople have to say about it. When parents get divorced, it des have an effec on their children, but some kids going thru that situation might want to see how other people gt through it. The articles may have been personal, but i feel a though it could've also helped a lot of kids with their everyday life.

I don't know if the articles should've been published. I think the Supreme Court didn't rule in their favor.

They both are right because the 1st amendment should be put in process but other students should not have to know about other personal bussiness there only kids this is not the big world

9:11 AM

i think the pricipal was wrong because they were just saying what hey felt and they didnt get to publish it

10:40 AM

Anonymous Anonymous said...

Well, Since it was the school's paper, the court ruled in favor of the school. If they were to make their own paper that would have been ok

10:42 AM

Anonymous Anonymous said...

I think the girls should have been able to right the issues and publish them into the school paper, because now adays people in schools need to realize these types of issues and if a student of there age reads the article maybe they will take an affect to it.

10:42 AM

Anonymous Anonymous said...

they had the right to express themselves. yes they should have been published the stories wasnt going to hurt anyone

10:42 AM

Anonymous Anonymous said...

I think the juge ruled in the girls favor, because all these situations are occuring alot now days, and teens should hear about it.

10:44 AM

Anonymous Anonymous said...

i think the courts ruled in there favor because i think they should have the right to talk about it because so much of it is happening at the school. And its not senstive when girls walk around pregnant or kids try to kill themselves because there parents got a divorce. maybe it could stop people from feeling as bad about what there going threw if they knew others were going threw the same thing.

10:50 AM

Anonymous Anonymous said...

thoses were their rights so they should rule for them!!

10:52 AM

Anonymous Anonymous said...

i htink the court ruled in favor of the girl. that is just retarted because little do they no how that is effecting the kids of today. divorce can make a kid not do his/her work in school they can start misbehaving and just going insane at the thought of their parents not being togeather.
