GRUTTER V. BOLLINGER (2003)

In 1997, Barbara Grutter, a white Michigan resident, was denied admission to the University of Michigan Law School. Grutter, who had a 3.8 undergraduate grade point average and good standardized test scores, sued the university over the law school's affirmative action policy, which considered race as a factor in admissions. Michigan and many other universities use affirmative action to increase the number of minority students admitted. Grutter claimed that Michigan admitted less-qualified minority applicants in violation of federal civil rights laws and the Fourteenth Amendment, which guarantees citizens "equal protection" under the law.

[HOW DO YOU THINK THE SUPREME COURT RULED?] [WHAT IS YOUR OPINION ON AFFIRMATIVE ACTION?]

I think that they will probably rule as the collage did something wrong or is guilty and probably award Barbara some sort of something.

I think the court did not rule in favor of her. I believe in affirmative action because we minorities have a lot of catching up to do.

i think the court ruled in favor of the student. i think affirmative action is a dumb idea. it should be based on acedemics not race

8:05 AM

Anonymous Anonymous said...

I think that the college is going to have a problem with this for not letting her go to that college.

I THINK THAT SHE HAD A GOOD ENOUGH GPA AND THATS WHAT THEY LOOK AT WHEN U GO TO COLLEGE YOUR AKADEMIC SKILLS RIGHT........I ALSO THINK THAT THEY SHOULD SUE THE SCHOOL.

they might want to sue the college. i dont think it was fair for the women because she was smart enough

Well i think that they ruled for the girl.

i believe that her gpa was good enogh to get into the college and now she can sue the college for what they have done

If race was a factor in this case then they should be sued. As far as affirmative action i feel they grutter needs to take advantage of

8:07 AM

Anonymous Anonymous said...

i think they would rule under grutters case. my opinion is that every body should be treated the same and they should not be racist.

I believe that she will get into the college but they will probably take this to court to see if they can get some money out of this.

I believe the supreme court should allow grutter to sue the college. They're not letting her in because of her race, but the 14th amendment states that all citizens have equal protection under the law. Therefore, the college shouldnt have been able to deny her!

I agree wth affirmitive action because our society is still based on the color of our skin sometimes and order for everyone to be treated equal, we need affirmitive action to take charge.

1- i thinkthe supreme court rulded this unconstitutional.

2- i think Affirmative action is set because there might be a fight that might put the entaire school endanger.

They are going to rule the girl over the college because her gpa is good enough to attend that college...probably going to sue the college

8:50 AM

Anonymous Anonymous said...

her gpa is good enough so why wouldn't they accept her?

8:53 AM

Anonymous Anonymous said...

their going to sue the college

8:54 AM

Anonymous Anonymous said...

I think the court ruled in her favor. Affirmative action shouldn't be based on what race you are, but it should be based on how well you do as far as academics are concerned.

8:55 AM

Anonymous Anonymous said...

i think they ruled for the girl. I think it is wrong to discriminate against people based on their race

8:55 AM

Anonymous Anonymous said...

I don't feel that the college should have denied her. her test scores and GPA were good enough to attend. I think the supreme court ruled good.

8:56 AM

Anonymous Anonymous said...

guilty, the college should have let her in

8:56 AM

Anonymous Anonymous said...

Well The College Going To Get In Trouble For Not Letting Him Attend And He Got A Good GPA

i think that they she will get somthing becuase maby there was a mix up with the process and that her application was lost

He had good belief to why it was done but may need more evidence than just thinking that it's a racism problem.

they should rule in favor of the girl

9:00 AM

Anonymous Anonymous said...

The court would probably rule as if the college did somrthing wrong and pled guilty, but i think that the court would give Barbara Grutter a =nother chance to atten to a great college because of her gpa was very good.

9:03 AM

Anonymous Anonymous said...

Yes I think the court ruled in his favor about not getting accepted becaz of da affirmative action but not the part of the college enrolling underqualified students.

9:05 AM

Anonymous Anonymous said...

i dont really think that they are racist , im sure there are some white people in that college .he might not have good enough grades to get in that college

9:06 AM

Anonymous Anonymous said...

My opinion on affirmative action i have none.

9:06 AM

Anonymous Anonymous said...

i think that the supreme court did good on this ruling. in a situation like this one its true someone that is a minority is automatically going to get accepted especially if their criteria is better than the leading competior

9:09 AM

Anonymous Anonymous said...

I think ruled unjustly because this sort of thing happens to African American students all the time trying to get accepted into to promdominately white schools but the court looks the other way.Affirmative action is not something i agree with because a student should be accepted because of their grades and not because they have to meet a race qouta.

I think they should sue the college because it doesn't matter what race you are you should be able to attend any college of your choice.

he will probably rule that the the college is gulty but who knows.....

10:32 AM

Anonymous Anonymous said...

I think he juge right

10:32 AM

Anonymous Anonymous said...

i believe she is right i think people should be able to attend any school they want

10:33 AM

Anonymous Anonymous said...

i think that it is good that she didnt get in because it gives more minorities the chance to get n education.

10:34 AM

Anonymous Anonymous said...

i think they will rule in favor and sue the college for not admitting her

10:35 AM

Anonymous Anonymous said...

I BELIEVE THAT THE SUPREME COURT SHOULD LET GRUTTER SUE THE COLLEGE. JUST BECAUSE OF THE COLOR OF SOMEBODY'S SKIN COLOR DOES NOT MEAN THEY SHOULD BE DENIED THEIR EDUCATION. I ALSO BELIEVE IN AFFIRMATIVE ACTION B/C WHETHER OR NOT ANYBODY LIKES IT, THE RIGHT CHOICE HAS TO BE MADE.

10:36 AM

Anonymous Anonymous said...

I think she lost the case, she mad cause they giving Blacks the opportunity to attend the college, who cant afford it but she can. THATS SELFISH!

10:37 AM

Anonymous Anonymous said...

the supreme court should rule the university as guilty, race nor gender should prevent someone from something that they spend countless hours on and dedication to be denied from something after they have reach the general requirements of the university.....

I agree with bsteele i mean if you are serious about collegen and have a high GPA like that then they should not have denied her especially since they admit people with lesser grades.

12:17 PM

Anonymous Anonymous said...

they are probably going to rule for her to get admitted

12:19 PM

Anonymous Anonymous said...

I think the supreme court ruled in Grutter favor.
I think affirmative action is good for the minority. It is still harder for them due to all the obstacles they have to overcome. Affirmative action just lessen the struggled alittle bit for minority students.

they should sue the college

i think they will probly rule in favor of the girl because she had the grades and afirmative action will be a good thing since history repeats itself and there will probly be racsism in the future
